PRO's and why you need to be a member

Updated: Jun 13, 2022

Performing Rights

So, what exactly is a PRO?

A performing rights organization (PRO) is an agency that ensures songwriters and publishers are paid. PROs track, collect, license music and pay the songwriter and music publisher public performance royalties from any outlet that plays music publicly as defined by the US Copyright Act. The biggest PROs in the United States are ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC (Canada has SOCAN).

Many independent Artist's don't realize the importance of being a member of a PRO is. Many more don't even know what a PRO is.

So you have this hot new song and you've uploaded it to Soundcloud, YouTube, and Instagram. Fans are really loving the song and they are sharing it, streaming it and before you know it your song is on fire. You use an electronic distribution outlet and your song gets submitted to Spotify, Tidal, Pandora, and many other streaming sights and internet radio. You submit your song to radio stations and if your lucky......... extremely lucky you get put in rotation and you song takes off and it's being played all over the internet and multiple radio stations. Clubs pick it up and it's the hottest thing in the country! Wow, your so excited. You're getting all these spins and plays but then you realize you're not getting any money for your music being used. Why not?

BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT A MEMBER OF A PERFORMING RIGHTS ORGANIZATION

You're missing out on royalties you could be receiving. BMI, ASCAP, SEASAC, SoundExchange, and SOCAN are just a few of the organizations that collect composition royalties worldwide. It's your music and you deserve to be compensated for it when someone uses it for commercial gain. Why would you leave money on the table? Many Artist as I said before aren't even aware that these agencies exist and because they are not focused on the business they end up losing money. Ignorance is the biggest reason so many Artist fail in the music and entertainment industry.

Now I'm not going to go into all the details in this post, but if you would like to learn more about the benefits of membership in one of the organizations then stay tuned in for upcoming articles or you can call our agency at the number listed below.
